A genuine Black Friday bed discount is taken off a price the retailer has actually charged, in real volume, in the weeks just before the sale, applies to the size you actually want, and still holds once delivery is added at checkout. If any one of those is missing, the “saving” is mostly marketing.
By the Harmony Beds workshop team, West Yorkshire · Updated October 2026 · 7-minute read
Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November, and for bed and mattress shoppers it is the busiest discount week of the year. It is also the week when “was” prices, “up to 70% off” banners and countdown clocks do the most work. We build beds to order in our Yorkshire workshop and sell them direct, so we see both sides: what a bed really costs to make, and how discounts are dressed up online. This guide shows you how to check any deal in a few minutes, including ours.
Why bed discounts are harder to judge than most
Beds and mattresses are bought rarely, usually every seven to ten years, so most of us have no instinct for what a fair price looks like. That makes the crossed-out “was” price the main thing many shoppers judge a deal on. The problem is that a “was” price is only meaningful if people genuinely paid it.
The UK regulator agrees. In August 2024 the Competition and Markets Authority published specific guidance for online mattress sellers, Discount and reference pricing principles: selling mattresses online, after finding that some retailers sold only a small share of their mattresses at the advertised “was” price. The same principles are a sensible test for any bed, divan or bed frame you buy online.

7 checks for a genuine Black Friday bed deal
- Was the “was” price really charged? Look the product up now, before the sale. Screenshot the price. If the Black Friday “was” price is higher than what you saw in October, the discount has been inflated. Price-history tools and a simple screenshot are your best friends.
- How long has it been “on sale”? A bed that has been “50% off” for most of the year is not on sale; that is its price. A genuine reference price is one the product sold at for a meaningful period, immediately before the discount began.
- Read “up to” as “on one item”. “Up to 70% off” usually applies to a single size, colour or clearance model. Check the discount on the exact size you need, whether that is a 4’6 double or a 5’0 king size bed.
- Compare the total, not the headline. Add delivery, assembly, old-bed removal and any mattress you need, then compare the final checkout figure. UK law now bans “drip pricing”, where unavoidable fees only appear late in checkout, so a surprise charge is a red flag.
- Ignore urgency you can’t verify. Countdown clocks that reset, “only 2 left” on a made-to-order product, and pop-ups saying “14 people are viewing this” are pressure, not information. The only urgency worth trusting is a stated end date and a real delivery lead time.
- Compare the specification, not the percentage. 30% off a well-built bed is a better deal than 60% off a weak one. Check the frame timber, the storage mechanism, the fabric and the fire-safety standard (see the table below).
- Check the after-sale terms. Black Friday should not shorten the warranty or the returns window. Read the delivery and returns pages before you pay, not after.
What to check on any bed listing
Use this table to compare two beds on equal terms, whatever the discount banner says.
| What to check | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Frame material | Named timber, such as FSC-certified pine | “Quality materials” with no detail |
| Fire safety | Upholstery made to British Standard BS 7177 | No standard mentioned |
| Storage | Mechanism named: gas-lift ottoman or 2/4-drawer divan | “Plenty of storage” |
| Fabric | Fabric named (bouclé, linen weave, velvet) and swatches available | “Premium fabric”, no samples |
| Delivery | A stated lead time and whether delivery is free | “Fast delivery” with fees at checkout |
| Warranty and returns | Warranty length and returns terms stated on the product page | Terms only in small print |
| Who made it | A named maker, address and company number | No trading address |
What UK law says about “was” prices
Since April 2025 the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 has let the CMA enforce consumer law directly and fine businesses up to 10% of global turnover for misleading practices. In September 2026 the High Court ruled in a case about mattress reference pricing. The court did not adopt the CMA’s proposed fixed sales-volume ratio, but it confirmed that the longer a product stays at a discounted price, the less realistic its “was” price becomes.
For shoppers the practical message is simple: a “was” price is a claim, and you are entitled to test it. If something looks wrong, you can report it to Citizens Advice.
How we price Black Friday 2026 at Harmony Beds
We think a guide like this is only worth reading if we hold ourselves to it, so here is exactly how our Black Friday works.
- 30% off every bed, from our everyday price. No inflated “was” price, no “up to”. The everyday price is the one on our site today.
- A real example: the Ilkley TV Bed in a 4’6 double is £749. With the Black Friday code it is £524.30, a saving of £224.70.
- Dates: Black Friday Weeks run from 20 November to 23:59 on 1 December 2026. They end on that date.
- Free UK mainland delivery, as always. It is not a Black Friday extra; every bed already includes it. See our delivery and assembly details.
- Waiting list first. Newsletter subscribers receive the code 24 hours before it goes public. Because every bed is hand-built to order in West Yorkshire, earlier orders go into the build queue first.
- Pay your way. Klarna from £17 a month, or PayPal. See our payment options.
Black Friday bed deals: questions shoppers ask
When is Black Friday 2026 in the UK?
Black Friday 2026 is on Friday 27 November, with Cyber Monday on 30 November. Many retailers, including Harmony Beds, run offers across a longer window; ours runs from 20 November to 1 December.
Are Black Friday bed deals actually cheaper?
Some are, some aren’t. A deal is genuine when the price you pay is lower than the price the bed sold at in the weeks before the sale. Screenshot prices in October so you can compare.
Is 30% off a good discount on a bed?
It is a strong discount when it comes off a real everyday price on a well-specified bed. A bigger percentage off an inflated “was” price can leave you paying more.
Should I choose an ottoman or a divan on Black Friday?
It depends on what you need to store. An ottoman lifts the whole base for one large storage space; a divan uses drawers. Our guide to ottoman beds versus divan storage compares them side by side.
Will a made-to-order bed bought on Black Friday arrive before Christmas?
Check the stated lead time before ordering. Our beds are built to order in Yorkshire and the delivery window is shown on each product page. Ordering early in the sale gives the most room before the holidays.
How can I check the bed will fit my room?
Measure the room and check the bed’s external dimensions, not just the mattress size. Our UK bed sizes guide lists every size in centimetres.
Is Black Friday a good time to buy a mattress too?
Yes, if you apply the same checks. Our comparison of top-rated UK value mattresses explains what to look for beyond the discount, and Carter & Lewis mattresses are 35% off during our Black Friday Weeks. Buying both? See whether bed and mattress bundles are cheaper.
